Malcolm Gaston

Malcolm Gaston, CPA, CPFA(UK), ICD.D

Malcolm’s career spans the public sector at international, national, provincial, and local levels. Central to this has been his belief in the value of audit, accountability and oversight between, and within, the executive and parliamentary branches of government.

As Assistant Auditor General for 14 years, Malcolm was responsible for leading performance audits at the Office of the Auditor General of British Columbia (OAGBC), and later brought his expertise to the role of Strategic Priorities Advisor to the Auditor General before his retirement in 2024. Through his time at OAGBC, Malcolm established strong links to public sector auditors in the Northwest US, developed OAGBC’s governance and performance reporting products, and advised on emerging areas such as sustainability reporting and audit in the public sector.

Malcolm started his career with the UK National Audit Office in London and then Edinburgh before working for KPMG and PwC, where he delivered audit and advisory services to public sector and not-for-profit clients. Before moving to Canada in 2005, Malcolm was with Audit Scotland leading Best Value audits of local government. Malcolm also has strategic and financial management experience as Chief Financial Officer of a Scottish crown agency.

Malcolm served as a board director of CAAF for six years, including as Vice-Chair and Chair of the Governance, and Audit and Finance Committees. Malcolm holds an MA in Psychology from the University of Glasgow, CPA(BC) and CPFA(UK) designations, and the Institute of Corporate Directors ICD.D designation.
