My Fellowship

My Canadian placement:

Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of Alberta.

My Canadian audit team:

I was part of a team conducting a follow-up audit of the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped program, led by Principal Maureen Manning.

My most valuable learning:

Working on this audit, I learned how the team members identify and break down the main risk areas and how they will be assessed so as to maximize the added value of the audit. It was also valuable seeing how constant discussion between team members and supervisors helped ensure everyone had a common understanding of the audit.

How my Canadian colleagues and mentors helped me:

My Canadian colleagues and mentors helped me in making myself comfortable at work by explaining and showing me whatever I needed. They also helped me outside of work, where they showed me things like the grocery stores and they were so kind to invite us to their homes and to restaurants to get to know each other more.

What I enjoyed most:

The working environment was so amazing and encouraging. I enjoyed the team spirit during audits, where every team member is committed and supporting each other.

My audit plan:Implementation of the Smart Classroom Project

I developed my audit plan project with the guidance of my mentors, Principal Mike Shorter and Audit Manager Mark Wright of OAG Alberta and CAAF Associate Frank Barrett.

The connection to my country’s development priorities:

Rwanda has made the use of ICT (information and communications technology) a core priority in all sectors, including education. The use of ICT in education is considered an important strategy for achieving social and economic transformation, tapping into the potential of an empowered population. This audit will assess whether the smart classrooms project is efficiently and effectively implemented so as to enhance quality education and its relevance to the labor market. The topic is related to Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education, and will also consider SDG 5, Gender Equality, by assessing whether gender-disaggregated data are collected to see if there are gender gaps in access to smart classrooms.

How CAAF and my host office helped:

CAAF and my host office helped me to have an understanding of the subject using different sources and to identify the areas of risk, so as to have a scope and audit objective that would help me have an audit that will add value.

The skills and knowledge I improved by developing this plan:

A key skill I improved by working on this plan is how to scope a performance audit. This was done through understanding the process description and then identifying areas of risks.

My future impact:

The new knowledge I’m most excited to share with my colleagues:

The new knowledge I’m most excited to share is how to include gender equality in performance audit reports.

The difference I hope to make:

My planned audit will show how ICT in schools through smart classrooms is adding value to education. It will also give a picture of the level of participation of boys and girls in smart classrooms and ICT in education in general.

My professional goals:

My goals are to improve in planning and executing performance audits so that I can maximize their added value and contribute to changing the lives of our citizens.

My Experience

The most Canadian thing I did was…

watch the Edmonton Oilers ice hockey game on TV.

What surprised me most when I arrived in Canada was…

how smart, nice, caring and open are Canadians.

My favourite cultural experience in Canada was…

to go watch a WWE live show and MMA fights.

What I’ll miss most about Canada is…

the winter.

Something few Canadians know about my country is…

my country’s nickname is the Land of a Thousand Hills (Pays des Milles Collines).

My Fellowship experience in one sentence:

My Fellowship experience was enlightening and fruitful.

My Fellowship in a single word:

Constructive.

Now that I have completed the Fellowship…

I will share the knowledge I have acquired with all my colleagues, either through training or in our daily work.
