CAAF Hosts a Virtual 2020 Pan-Canadian Municipal Audit Forum

On May 6, 2020, CAAF hosted its 6th annual Pan-Canadian Municipal Audit Forum virtually. The number of participating municipalities was our greatest yet with 13 joining the videoconference (see list below).

The CAAF Municipal Audit Forum is the only opportunity for all Canadian municipal heads of audit to meet, discuss and exchange views on important issues affecting them. This year, discussion topics included:

  • impacts of COVID-19 on municipalities;
  • roundtable on successes, innovations and challenges; and;
  • capacity building in the municipal oversight community.

Participants spoke about the challenges of operating in the current environment, both internal (working remotely), and outward-facing (auditing municipal governments on areas such as emergency response and business continuity). Participants discussed plans for changing and adapting going forward, dealing with uncertainty over the next few years as COVID-19 unfolds, and bold steps needed to deliver audits in this new environment.

Although participants were disappointed not to be able to meet in person due to current travel restrictions, they were pleased to have the opportunity to come together virtually and voted unanimously to hold the forum semi-annually.

Representatives from the following municipal audit offices attended the forum:

  • Auditor General for Local Government (BC)
  • Calgary
  • Commission municipale du Québec
  • Edmonton
  • Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Lévis
  • Longueuil
  • Ottawa
  • Terrebonne
  • Toronto
  • Trois-Rivières
  • Vancouver
  • Winnipeg

The next forum will be taking place in November 2020.
