Innocent KayondeOffice of the Auditor General of State Finances of Rwanda Senior Principal Auditor |
My FellowshipMy Canadian placement:Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of Alberta My Canadian audit team:I was involved in audits on post-secondary student accessibility, rural crimes initiatives, and forestry management, under the direction of Principals Maureen Manning and Pamela Hlewka. My most valuable learning:During the Fellowship, I gained a better understanding on different aspects of the audit planning process which enabled me to analyse and document work from different sources. How my Canadian colleagues and mentors helped me:My mentors provided invaluable guidance and constructive feedback that helped me learn and improve. Through the knowledge and experiences that they shared I was able to comprehend different best practices that can be applied in varying contexts of audit work. My colleagues also offered great insights and perspectives that enabled me to appreciate the value of collaboration and teamwork, which has shaped me into a better leader. What I enjoyed most:The rich diversity that exists in perspectives, experiences and backgrounds, not just at work but outside work, and not just in people but places also. Collaborating and interacting with individuals from different cultural and professional backgrounds broadened my own understanding and appreciation of different perspectives and places. My audit plan:Provision of sporting activities and facilities in learning institutions by the Ministry of EducationI developed my audit plan with the guidance of my mentors at the OAG of Alberta, Audit Managers Taylor Collins and Scott Loder. The connection to my country’s development priorities:This subject is in line with Rwanda’s overall goal of enhancing human capital that can contribute to the country’s growth and development. Sports in the education sector can help promote gender equality by ensuring that both boys and girls are given equal opportunities to engage in sporting activities of their choice. By conducting audits with a gender lens, equitable access and participation can be ensured, thus contributing to SDG 5 on gender equality. Other good outcomes from sports in education, like improved academic performance, student engagement, teamwork and leadership, can contribute to SDG 4 on improving the quality of education. How CAAF and my host office helped:The feedback and suggestions for improvement provided during the mentorship and review sessions helped me clarify the objective of the audit, key areas of focus and relevant stakeholders, thus ensuring that the audit plan can be implementable. The guidance and expertise, especially in applying the gender lens and integrating SDGs, contributed to my development of a well-designed audit plan. In addition, risk mapping based on the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders may help in identifying key risk areas to focus on. The skills and knowledge I improved by developing this plan:Overall, working on the audit plan helped me to better understand that SDGs and gender equality need to be integrated in audits from the beginning and therefore proper documentation and reference needs to be made to the guiding national goals and strategies. My future impact:The new knowledge I’m most excited to share with my colleagues:When documenting audit topics at the planning stage it is important to include the criteria that will be used in assessment and for OAG management to discuss its validity, so that any amendments that need to be made to it are done. From a communication perspective, it is important to keep track of what stakeholders speak about regarding the OAG because it provides room for engagement and also understanding their opinions and needs. The difference I hope to make:Through conducting audits that analyze organizational structures and practices and identify gaps for improvement, with the help of my colleagues I will endeavor to enhance accountability and promote equitable development. My anticipation is that this will ensure that resources are effectively allocated and utilised to address gender disparities and advance national development priorities. My professional goals:As a graduate Fellow I intend to leverage the knowledge and skills I have gained to improve on the audit work that OAG conducts, especially integrating important aspects like gender equality and inclusiveness to the audit subject matter. By doing so I hope to enhance accountability, promote inclusivity, and contribute to sustainable development outcomes within my workplace and beyond. |

My Experience |
|||||
The most Canadian thing I did was…Eating poutine, donair and Timbits, replacing sugar with maple syrup, going to see the northern lights (Aurora Borealis), watching ice hockey, baseball and football (not soccer!), and following pedestrian traffic signs everywhere. My favourite cultural experience in Canada was…Going to the Canadian Museum of History, where I was able to get a better understanding of Canada’s history. |
