Marianne Avarello
Marianne is a seasoned instructor, drawing from her experiences providing assurance and advisory services to the public and private sectors over the past 23 years. She has a keen interest in developing and delivering audit training to provide participants with a solid foundation and share better practices. Her enthusiasm and approach to training, bolstered by her innate curiosity, encourages participation, and supports learning.
An independent consultant, Marianne provides internal audit and advisory services, including designing and delivering training, and conducting quality assessments. Previously she was Senior Manager with a small management consulting firm; and an audit executive for over 15 years with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) where she held various positions including Director-Internal Audit, Director-Performance Audit, and Internal Specialist-Internal Audit. She was the Chair, National Professional Practices Committee – Performance Audit where she collaborated on challenging and emerging issues with stakeholders from the CCOLA community; and delivered presentations on performance auditing and effective internal auditing to delegates from several foreign countries. Her earlier roles included Director, Internal Audit at Hydro Ottawa Holdings Inc.; and Senior Manager, Advisory Services at KPMG LLP. She has managed performance audits, internal audits, practices inspections, quality assessment reviews, and risk assessments; developed multi-year risk-based audit plans and engagement plans; with a focus on building client relationships.
Marianne’s varied teaching and facilitation experiences are complementary. She was an instructor for the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy’s (CIPFA) and taught the Governance and Risk Management course. She has conducted training and facilitated workshops on effective communication for auditors, performance audit, internal audit, and identification and assessment of risks and controls across Canada. She was also the instructor for the External Auditing course with the now defunct Certified General Accountants Association of Canada.
Marianne is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA,) and is accredited by the IIA in internal quality assessment/validation. She is also an active volunteer with CPA Ontario and a former board member of the Ottawa Chapter of the IIA, having served as Chair, Member Services.
